Home based businesses are sweeping the nation. And it is no surprise. In the last 2 years, the US alone has lost more than 400,000 jobs every single week! It is almost impossible to measure the impact this has on a nation's morale or on its collective psyche. But while all this doom and gloom is going on, people still need to eat. People still need to pay their mortgage. People still need to make their car payments and pay their bills.
These necessities gave rise to the home based business boom. After millions of folks have tried to find employment in the regular ways, many discouraged workers are turning to work at home plans, and online businesses to fund their families. But nearly every home based entrepreneur runs into the same problems. This article deals with one of the première obstacles: distractions.
Even as I write this article, my family is assembling in the living room and turning on the TV while they eat dinner. Two distractions right there! I love to eat, and it is dinner time, so all the smells of tacos and salsa are currently filling my senses. (I'm still full from a large lunch so I have no room to eat.) But nevertheless, the distraction exists. And at the same time, my son-in-law is changing the channel on the TV guide to see what's playing on the satellite. Everybody is talking, and I still have a little more writing to do. What's the answer?
First, the cure to distractions is not to have any. If you can complete your work while others are at work or school, or before they get up in the morning, or after they go to bed at night, then you are already well ahead of the game.
Second, start a routine. Whenever your best work time is, set it apart from everything else, and stick to it! For me, my best time is generally in the AM. So from 7am to noon, I set aside the time for my online businesses; writing, emailing, setting up new webpages, keyword research, and domain research.
In that time, I allow a bit of time for breakfast, but otherwise, I try to stick to my routine like glue. Today was a real exception, and that's why I find myself writing at the end of the day (5:45PM).
Third, make sure you have your own place to work. A place where you can reasonably expect to go without experiencing disruptions. It should be a home office (best), a rarely used area like a basement, or even the kitchen table if your family or roomates will leave you alone. But be sure when you're working there, you're strictly working; no Facebook, no personal email; no personal calls.
Fourth, if distractions do intrude, then move yourself away from them until you can finish your task. Few things are more disturbing than trying to work through a distraction, only to find out that you made a big error in your job.
Employ these simple rules, and you'll find yourself well on the way to more productive days.
I am one of the blessed ones. My children are mostly grown, and my house is quiet during the day. Plus, I have very little trouble ignoring TV or other distractions. After your first few weeks at home, you may find that is true of you. If you are interested in what I do for my business, click here: http://www.trainyourselfforwealth.com/.
