You're a boomer in un-retirement mode, and you want to become an entrepreneur and start your own business, but let's face it, you're scared out of your mind! Be honest, does this describe how you feel? It certainly did for me when I started my home-based Internet marketing business.
First, know that this emotion is quite normal and you share it with over 80% of baby boomers that want to quit their corporate job, but are frightened to actually take the plunge.
Most of the time people stay put, however unhappy they are, mainly because they're thankful to have a job in this uncertain and turbulent economy. Staying put is the easier option, regardless of frustrations, regrets, and the stress.
What if you were so fed up with your situation that you plucked up enough courage to call it quits to start out on your own with a home-based business? What are some of the things that you worry about, and that keep you up at night?
Here are five ways to alleviate your fears, whatever they are:
1. Embrace the feeling
Realize that feeling fearful is normal. In fact, it's built into our psyche to have a "flight or fight" mentality. It's important to realize that however hard you try to avoid the fear emotion, it's a futile exercise. You actually need a dose of fear for survival purposes. What you don't want to do, is to allow your fear to paralyze you. Rather embrace it. Understand it, and learn how to best deal with it when it rears it ugly head.
2. Muster courage
If you haven't read the book by Elizabeth Jeffers, "Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway," I highly recommend it. Once you've embraced your fear you then need to muster up the courage to actually start your business. Getting started is the hardest thing to do, because making excuses, and getting stuck in inertia is much easier, and far more comfortable.
3. Do it
One of the easiest home-based businesses to get started is an Internet marketing business. Make sure you do your research so that you find the most reputable company to work with. Then just do it, as Nike so brilliantly coined the phrase that has become universal. It hits the spot without any "ifs," "ands," or "buts."
4. Practice makes perfect
Realize that getting it right start away is totally unrealistic, and worrying about it doesn't help. Starting a business from home as a boomer entrepreneur probably means learning some new skills, which take time and of course, practice to integrate. Be willing and open to gain knowledge in areas you might have resisted in the past, such as using social media.
5. Stick to it
Starting a new venture takes time, and it also takes a "stick to it" attitude. It so easy to want to give up when business doesn't come your way as quickly, and as easily as you'd like. With all the scams, and fly by night companies on the Internet, it takes time to build a reputation so that people trust that your business is authentic. Keep persevering, and looking for ways to improve your skills.
Whenever you feel like quitting, just think of Thomas Edison. He tried thousands of different experiments before he found the right formula for the light bulb. He looked at each of them as opportunities to improve.
Starting out on your own can be very scary, but when you embrace that feeling and use it to fuel your motivation to move forward, to improve, wonderful things can happen.
